Did You File for Homestead??
The term homestead exemption refers to exemptions from property tax that homeowners may claim. As of January 1st of the current year you must own and reside in the property to claim the exemtion for that year. If you have not filed for HOMESTEAD and wish to do so ensure you get your application in by April 1st of the current year for it to become effective that year. Ex: File by April 1st 2017 homestead is applied for your 2017 tax bill. File after April 1st 2017 and the exemption will not show until your 2018 tax statement. Once you have applied for homestead you do not need to re-apply unless you are eligible for further exemptions. You may only claim Homestead on ONE piece of property in or out of county. The authorized exemption will be deducted from your assessed value, and will estabilish a homestead based for you once approved.
Requirements are: You must own and live on the property. Please bring a copy of your electric bill or any utility bill to show proof of residence. If you are 62 and older or a disabled Veteran, additional exemptions may be available; bring in your income tax return to see if you meet the requirements for additional exemptions.
