Effingham County Animal Shelter

Our shelter is located on Hwy 119 South, just off Hwy 21 By-Pass. Call for directions if you are not familiar with the area. We accept and appreciate all types of donations for our furry friends. We currently are in need of flea & tick prevention, bleach, laundry soap, dish soap, oil dry. Our adoption hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30am to 4:30 pm and Monday and Thursday from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Due to the possibility of unforeseen emergencies, we suggest calling ahead before dropping off animals. Office and Kennels are closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Proof of Effingham County residency is required to drop off any animal.

The pets at our shelter are both strays and owner turn-ins. Strays must be kept a minimum of 3 days before they are available for adoption. Our pets are adopted to approved homes only.

Please Note:

  • Unaltered animals may not be taken home on the day of adoption.
  • Upon adoption, an appointment will be scheduled by the shelter staff for pet’s spay/neuter. All animals are to remain at the shelter until their appointment date, after which they may be picked up by adopter from the clinic performing the operation. NO ANIMAL IS TO LEAVE THE SHELTER BEFORE BEING ALTERED - NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Animals will be heartworm tested upon being adopted (if age appropriate). If the animal is heartworm positive, the adopter will be notified and can opt to return the animal for a refund, exchange the animal, or continue with the adoption.
  • Additional expenses could be incurred during spay/neuter (I.E. if a female dog is in heat/pregnant or a male is cryptorchidic). These will be at the expense of the owner and will not be covered by the shelter.
  • If you would like to add additional services (pre-op bloodwork, pain medicine to go home, fecal testing, microchip, etc), please call the clinic performing the spay/neuter before your animal’s scheduled appointment and speak to them about pricing.
  • Effingham County or the shelter CANNOT guarantee the health or temperament of this animal (s) and the Effingham County Animal Control shelter is therefore NOT responsible for any liability from actions or health of the adopted pet.
